The association of psychiatrist in Nigeria is pleased to announce that following its general election in November of 2017, at the hotel in Jos, there was inauguration of the new executive body on the 6th of January at the association’s secretariat in Federal Neuro-psychiatric Hospital Yaba, Lagos Nigeria.
The new executives consist of:
- Taiwo Lateef Sheikh, President
- Dr Ladipo A. Adepoju, Vice President
- Dr Joyce Ohiole Omoaregba, Secretary General
- Dr Appolos Chidi Ndukuba, Assistant Secretary General
- Dr Hannah, Iyabo Okunriboye, Treasurer
- Dr Kingsley Mayowa Okonoda, Auditor
- Olatunji Aina, Journal editor
- Dr Bassey Edet, Ex-Officio 2018-2020
In his inaugural speech, the incoming president thanked the previous executives for the successes they have recorded in piloting the affairs of the association. He added that the association has a crop of Young and visionary Psychiatrists Who must be given opportunity to participate in the decision making of the Association, and that they must be accorded opportunity to shape their own future and more importantly, APN must open doors of opportunity for them.
He solicited for the support and cooperation of all to translate the ideas of the new executives into reality. He set out the agenda for the new executive body as:
Task 1: Provide Responsible Leadership
Task 2: Reposition the APN to emerge as a major stake holder to drive the Mental Health Agenda for the Country (Implementation of the 2013 Mental Health Policy; Development of a Mental Health Plan, Passage of the Mental Health Bill, Increased advocacy for MH and visibility for the APN in a proactive manner, with engagement of all stakeholders)
Task 3: Effective deployment and utilization of the enormous pool of available expertise and human resources within the APN using the Committee System
Task 4: Empowerment of Early Career and Trainee Psychiatrists
Task 5: Internationalization Agenda: Proactively engage with Nigerian psychiatrists in the diaspora to join hands with us. Strong and positive engagement with the WPA, WFMH, and other Bodies.
